THE RTA has contracted Decotec (www.decotec.com.au) to demolish the Old Native Dog Creek Bridge north of Bombala on the Monaro Highway starting this month.
The final methodology is under review with external Structural Engineers and the RTA, but the company proposes to cut the bridge spans into 10/20 tonne sections using road saws and diamond wire saws.
Once cut into sections each piece will be lifted out using a 90 tonne crane, broken down using a excavator into manageable sizes, and transported off site to be crushed up and reused for road base.
There will be strict environmental and safety controls in place at all times with all methods reviewed by RTA, Inland Waterways, Workcover NSW, Independent Structural Engineers and the Department of Fisheries.
It is expected to take three to four weeks to complete the works, and the roadway will be clearly marked indicating when work is being carried out on site.
The total expected weight of concrete to be removed is around 400 tonnes, and allowing each truck will remove approximately 10 tonnes, it is expected that there will be around 40 truck loads. Additional to this there will be initial traffic movements setting up the site.
“Although DecoTec is a Sydney based company, we are currently working on projects in South East Queensland and Western Australia, and we recently completed a project in Colombia in South America,” Technical Director, John Murphy said.
“In all cases we try to give back to the community in which we work. To that end most of the subcontract work shall be carried out by local people from the Cooma, Bombala region, and we shall be staying in Bombala for the duration of the project.”
