THERE is never any shortage of colourful activities to enjoy at our local Australia Day Celebrations, but the awards presentations of the event are always a key feature.
This year was to be no exception, and on Saturday Mayor Bob Stewart was very pleased to again present the highly anticipated Citizen and Junior Citizen of the Year Awards.
2010 Citizen of the Year - Doreen Standen
Doreen Standen of Delegate was certainly a popular winner of the prestigious local title this year, and as the applause faded Cr Stewart gave the following Mayoral Citation for her win.
“Doreen has been a very active member of the community for many years. She has worked tirelessly and given many volunteer hours to a number of organisations within the Delegate district. These include -
• The Delegate School of Arts Committee. In recent years she has been the mainstay of the School of Arts Committee and has held this committee together when numbers were dwindling. Doreen also successfully applied for grants that resulted in the renovation of the kitchen into a modern facility, the installation of better stage lighting and the upgrading of the roof.
• The Delegate History Room. This has been a pet project of Doreen’s for a number of years. She has managed to obtain photos of the majority of servicemen and women from the Delegate District. This entailed tracking down and contacting family members for photos, copying those photos and displaying them in the History Room. She can be regularly found in the History Room painting the walls against damp, fixing photo frames and ensuring that artefacts both old and new are in pristine condition for viewing by tourists and family members who visit the Room. She always makes sure that the amenities are clean for those who visit the History Room, particularly when bus tours visit.
• Recently Doreen was instrumental in raising funds for a sculpture by the late Rix Wright so that Delegate would have a sculptural legacy from one of the district’s and Australia’s well known artists.
• Doreen is also a long term member of the Delegate Progress Association and volunteers her time for the Rural Transaction/ Community Technology Centre. She is also a member of two sub-committees - the History Room as detailed above and the Nurses’ Cottage. Doreen has spent many hours either cleaning or tidying the grounds of this accommodation. Lately she has also given a generous amount of her time working on the maintenance and upgrade of the Doctor’s House.
• Early Settlers Hut Committee. One of the founding members of this Committee, Doreen is always willing to cook a damper for the coach tours, tidy the Hut and maintain the grounds when necessary.
• Delegate Pastoral and Agricultural Society. Doreen has been a long standing member of this organisation and managed the kitchen very capably for a number of years.
• Delegate Country Club. This organisation has struggled financially for some time and Doreen has, and still does, put in many volunteer hours to make sure that this important community asset remains viable.
• Other committees that Doreen has been active on over the years or lent a helping hand to include the Delegate Sports-ground Committee, Snowy River March Re-enactment Celebrations, Delegate and Cabanandra Campdrafts, Delegate and Corrowong Bush Fire Brigades, Delegate Red Cross, Delegate RSL Sub-Branch and Delegate Pony Club. She has also actively participated in helping to make the mosaic signs displayed around the town.
Doreen is well respected in the community with a reputation “for getting the job done”, whether it be painting a wall, writing a grant application or cooking for a street stall.
She is always willing to lend a hand or help in any way possible. I congratulate Doreen on receiving the Award of Citizen of the Year for 2010.”
As expected Doreen was humble in her response on Saturday, expressing that she felt very honoured to receive the award, and passing her thanks onto the many people who had supported her over her years of ‘just getting things done’.
Doreen gave special thanks to Council’s Karen Cash for her ongoing help with a huge number of projects, before wishing the community an enjoyable Australia day.
