Fandango showcases local dance talent

27 May, 2009 09:21 AM
IT was standing room only once again at the Bombala RSL Club for the Fandango presented by the Monaro Dance Centre on Friday night.

The 11th annual fundraiser provided some fantastic entertainment as students took to the stage with performances in jazz, tap, ballet and hip hop.

For many students, especially the younger ones, this was their first Fandango show and they did not disappoint the huge audience.

The tap students opened the show with lots of sparkle in “Something for Everybody”.

Lady tappers Rachel Elwin, Donna Shelley and Emma Sullivan received big cheers and lots of encouragement for their first public performance.

Hannah Ingram, Tori and Chloe Wilson confidently took to the stage next in a dance of their own design to the song “Tokyo”. These young girls not only dance well, they also display quite a talent for choreography.

The youngest Hip Hop boys followed with their upbeat performance in an item with a basketball theme, “Getcha Head in the Game”.

Former Monaro Dance Centre student Simone Tummons then changed the pace with her beautiful contemporary solo.

Next on stage were the Primary Jazz students with their delightful, disco-inspired number “Let’s Groove”.

The Delegate Junior Higher/Senior Jazz students followed with a performance they dedicated to the memory of their friend, Kirsty Jamieson.

Then it was time for all of the ballet students to shine in a beautiful rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon”.

The program went from ballet to b-boys as the older Hip Hop students performed to “It’s Like That”.

New dance teacher Michelle Berwick then dazzled the crowd with her solo in the Broadway Jazz style.

The Bombala Junior Higher/Senior Jazz class chose the popular song “Poker Face” for their performance.

The show’s energetic and exciting finale, “Everybody’s Free”, featured a dance by the Junior Jazz students and finished with all performers on stage for a bow.

The fun continued when popular DJ, Matt Brown took control of the disco that followed. His music, lights, camera and videos had everyone up and dancing.

The event raised another $1,000 for the Community Fund. This brings the total of donations to the Community Fund by local Monaro Dance Centre students to $7,150 since 2003.

Cynthia Dolan, the local coordinator for the Monaro Dance Centre, would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the Fandango and contributed to its success.

The dance students and parents are to be commended for their continued support for the Fandango, which has become a showcase of local talent and great family entertainment as well as a fundraiser.

A very special thank you is extended to the Dance Centre’s new teacher Michelle Berwick who choreographed the show, to Simone Tummons who travelled from Bathurst to perform, and to Janet Lomas who captured the fun on video.

Many thanks must also go to the Bombala RSL Club, Bombala Foodworks, Bombala High School and Carol Ingram for their generous assistance and support for the Fandango.
