MINISTER for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald last week announced a new $700,000 Habitat Action Program to improve fish habitat in NSW and bolster recreational populations.
Projects to be funded include fish passage remediation; active floodgate management; riparian zone rehabilitation; wetland rehabilitation; mangrove or seagrass protection; and re-snagging projects.
“This funding is a fantastic boost to the recreational fishing community and will assist fishers improve their local fishing spots, with the ultimate aim to ensure more fish in our rivers and estuaries,” Mr Macdonald said.
“The program aims to bolster important recreational fish populations, focusing on getting recreational fishing clubs, groups and individuals involved in habitat rehabilitation.”
An example of a successful local project funded in this way previously is the restoration of a section of Little Plains River by a local Landcare group, which took on everything from willow removal to revegetation.
“The program will be managed by NSW Department of Primary Industries with funding from fishing licence fees, through the Recreational Fishing Trusts,” Mr Macdonald explains.
“The one-year funding will restore and rehabilitate freshwater and saltwater fish habitats.
“The Habitat Action Program will provide grants of up to $30,000 to allow recreational fishers to proactively assist in improving recreational fishing stocks for future generations.
“This seed-funding will attract larger in-kind contributions to these projects from a range of organisations.
“The other key theme of the Program is the Fishers for Fish Habitat Network which will provide a platform for interested recreational fishers to share information and knowledge about habitat issues across NSW,” he said.
These include fish habitat and improving habitat for the community to enjoy.
Funds raised through the sale of the recreational fishing fee are placed into two trusts, one for saltwater and one for freshwater. Expenditure from both trusts is overseen by angler committees.
