Local Police report

27 May, 2009 09:27 AM
HI everyone, I hope you have all had a great week since our last bulletin, we have had a pretty full week with a number of incidents requiring our attention, some of which are outlined below.

In a follow up from last week, a safe stolen in one of the break-ins on May 14 was located under the Coolumbooka River Bridge last Tuesday.

The door to the safe had been removed with a crow bar or a similar jemmy device which would have created a lot of noise while it was being done.

Furthermore, we have recovered the pick axe that was used to break into the Champions Shoe Store and are hoping that someone out there recognises it.

The handle is very distinctive with a ‘grip’ pattern carved into it. We have put a photo of the pick axe in the paper, so if you recognise it please let us know; it might help solve the case.

Speaking of lost property, if you have lost a cordless drill, pop into or call the station because we may have it here. I found it at the Caravan Park last Tuesday, it has been banged up a bit, but if you are able to describe it adequately, you can have it back.

In other news, Police charged a 19 year old Delegate man with aggravated break and enter after an incident in Caveat Street on Friday night where he forced his way into a house whilst the residents were asleep.

He will appear at the Bombala Local Court at the next sitting on Thursday, June 18.

On May 18, an 18 year old Junee man crashed his vehicle on the Monaro Highway between Nimmitabel and Cooma after he was dazzled by the high beam lights of an oncoming vehicle. He was not injured and his vehicle required towing to get it out of the ditch.

Last Wednesday, a Jindabyne woman lost control of her vehicle on Black Lake Road Bobundra, resulting in it rolling and coming to rest on its side. She was conveyed to Cooma Hospital by Ambulance for minor injuries and as a precautionary measure due to her being pregnant.

On Friday night a Berridale man was killed after his vehicle left the roadway and travelled down an embankment, rolling a number of times before landing in Iron Pot Creek. He was trapped in the vehicle for a number of hours with Koscuiszko Road being closed whilst the retrieval process took place.

Yesterday, Grant and I spent six hours camped on the side of the Monaro Highway just out of Nimmitabel at the scene of a truck accident.

The semi trailer left the road after a mechanical failure resulted in the driver being unable to steer the truck around a slight right hand bend in the road. The driver was merely a passenger as the rig careered off the road and through a couple of table drains before coming to rest in a paddock.

Unbelievably it managed to stay upright and no real damage was done to the truck or the two brand new caravans it was carrying. However, the truck required towing for an inspection by RTA due to the mechanical fault being cited at the cause of the accident.

A Bombala man was issued a warning on Friday night for not carrying his drivers licence whilst driving. Please be aware that failure to carry your licence is an offence and you could cop a fine if caught.

In a continuance of the last couple of weeks, we are still receiving complaints of illegal hunters trespassing on properties in the Steeple Flat and Creewah areas.

We now have the names and registration numbers of some of those involved and will be speaking with those people very soon.

Police would like to remind anyone that has an old firearm laying around the farm or at home that the amnesty for unregistered firearms expires on May 31, 2009.

It is entirely possible that after the amnesty expires, your local police will be required to conduct audits on every person holding a firearms licence, so if you do have an old gun laying about, hand it in to us before the 31st or run the risk of being charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, when we do the audit.

There is no fee attached to handing in the gun, or for us to hold it if you are waiting for the paperwork to come through from Firearms Registry to register it in your name.

I think I speak for all the local police in saying, that we would rather have hundreds of guns stored here at the station than charge anyone for not taking advantage of the amnesty.

Well that’s it for this week, please take care and drive safely,

Yours in Crime Fighting

Senior Constable Rebecca Bavister
