Locals raise $5,000 for Salvos

27 May, 2009 10:22 AM
PUSHING aside the many worries of the economic crisis and the ongoing drought, the Bombala and district community showed its kind spirit over the weekend and gave generously to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal Door Knock.

An intrepid bunch of local collectors made their way around both Bombala and Delegate on Sunday to collect for the appeal, raising over $5,000 from the local communities.

This is of course a very impressive figure, and the Salvation Army and the local volunteers offer their most appreciative thanks to the district for digging so deep.

The local collectors who gave of their time to carry out the Door Knock on Sunday were -

Ian and Sue Haslingden, Janet Lomas, Chevaunne Heffernan, Denise Green, Sharon Platts, Charlie Maslin, Steven Reed, Andy Murdoch, Vern and Evonne Camm, Janette and Suzie Russell, Pearl Bennett, and school students, Hugh and Kaitlin Platts, Taylah Cottrell and George Reed.

The Salvation Army has been very pleased with the results of the Red Shield Appeal throughout all of NSW.

“After a year of massive demand upon our services due to economic factors and natural disasters, it is vital that we raise much-needed funds through the Red Shield Appeal and we thank all Australians who have contributed so generously,” said Appeal Director, Major Gary Masters.

“We do not take it for granted, and without this support we would not be able to continue with our wide range of social programs and community services, assisting those less fortunate in our society.

“Despite real economic pressures on many households, due to the financial crisis and deepening recession, it is evident that people are still strongly committed to assist those who are battling.

“We also thank the many thousands of volunteer collectors around Australia who assisted us this weekend in raising these vital funds, and the hundreds of Westpac employees who yesterday donated their time to assist with the appeal.”

For those who wish to make a tax deductible donation, please call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or visit salvos.org.au. Donations can also be made at any Westpac branch, or by sending a cheque to PO Box 9888 in any capital city.
