OCTOBER is of course Platypus Country Month in our district, and as part of the many activities planned there will naturally be a big focus placed on our local mascot.
This coming weekend will be a feast of learning and fun surrounding the fascinating creatures, beginning with a Paddle with the Platypus adventure on Saturday.
The Bombala National Parks and Wildlife Service will be taking interested people out to the Platypus Reserve between 4.30 and 6.30pm to actually get on the water and seek out the animals.
All canoeing gear will be supplied, and of course a qualified ranger will be leading the groups to ensure that the platypus adventure is enjoyed safely.
Naturally being on the water with the platypus is a wonderful way to learn more about them, with those over 10 years of age who are interested in attending being encouraged to book their place as soon as
possible.
Places are limited and bookings close this Friday, October 3, so contact the Bombala NPWS today on 6458 4080 to get in on the Paddle with the Platypus fun.
The following day it will be back out to the Platypus Reserve for a fascinating information session presented by the Platypus Pals.
Here the behaviour of the platypus will be outlined by the experts, and people will be able to learn about our own local platypus population, which is defying current trends by maintaining stable numbers.
This information session will be the perfect complement to the current project being undertaken by the Australian Platypus Conservancy Group that is working with locals to monitor our area’s platypus populations.
If you’d like to take part in the information session you can contact the Visitors Information Centre on 6458 4622, or Su King on 6458 8315, or simply turn up on the day.
Of course there are plenty of other activities coming up as Platypus Country Month unfolds, so make sure you check out the Purple Platypus in this week’s Bombala Times for all of the details.
