Police Report

01 Jul, 2009 10:10 AM
HI Everyone, its been a fairly busy couple of weeks since our last police report, and the Local Court sitting on June 18 has meant there is more to tell. So I will keep it short and sweet so I don’t take up too much room in the paper.

There have been a number of accidents that required Police attendance over the last couple of weeks.

The first occurred on Thursday, June 18, when a young man travelling to work from Bega, lost control of his vehicle on the Coolumbooka River Bridge. The vehicle slid into the side rails of the bridge due to the heavy frost and subsequent ice covering the surface of the bridge.

The young man was taken to Cooma Hospital and treated for severe concussion and hypothermia after he was found by his work mates laying in a ditch an hour and a half after the accident.

He was not issued an infringement notice due to weather and road conditions being the major contributing factor to the accident.

On Monday, June 22, a log truck got tangled up in power lines in the main street of Delegate causing those lines to become loose.

Another smaller truck then hit those lines again later on causing the live wires to fall to the roadway placing a number of people at risk. The driver of the log truck is yet to be spoken to by police.

Also on the 22nd, a log truck caught fire on the Monaro Highway at Ando resulting in the prime mover being burnt out.

The driver was able to get out of the truck in the nick of time after noticing the flames in his side vision mirror and pulling over onto the side of the road.

In other traffic related news, a young man was cautioned about riding his unregistered motor bike in the old quarry in Wellington Street. He could have faced up to $1,300 worth of fines for riding an unregistered and uninsured motor bike not to mention the court appearance for being unlicensed.

Please bear in mind that if you have a motor bike and want to ride it in town, unless it is registered, do not ride it on a road or a road related area. A road related area is any area that is open to and used by the public so that includes parks, vacant land, the river reserve and the Endeavour Nature Reserve.

Also in Wellington Street, some imbecile has thrown a beer bottle through the rear windscreen of a vehicle parked outside the owners’ home. The incident occurred sometime through the night of Friday, June 19, Police would like anyone with information about this to contact us.

On Monday, June 15, just after school ending, two boys dressed in Bombala High uniforms were seen breaking into the railway station through a side window. Unfortunately the witness was only a young child and was unable to provide any further details regarding descriptions or identities.

The offenders caused a fair bit of damage inside the building throwing items about and generally just being pigs. I think I have mentioned before the displays of neanderthal behaviour we occasionally see in our day to day duties - well this is a classic example of such.

A 43 year old woman from Bombala was issued a Criminal Infringement Notice on Friday for shoplifting. She stole an item from a store in the main street which was worth a little more than $10, and copped a fine of $300 for her actions. As the old adage goes, crime does not pay.

A 21 year old man from Delegate was charged with common assault after an altercation with a person known to him. He was also charged with an outstanding warrant. He appeared at Bombala Local Court on June 18 and his matters were adjourned to the next court date in August.

A 28 year old man from Bombala was also charged with common assault after a drunken fight which occurred at the intersection of Young and Maybe Streets in the very early hours of Saturday, June 27.

His victim required treatment at Cooma Hospital for numerous injuries. The offender will appear before the magistrate on August 20.

In our last bulletin, I mentioned troubles we have been having with illegal hunters in the Kybeyan and Nimmitabel areas. Well over the last weekend, Les from Nimmitabel and I had some hard won success in our protracted fight against these people.

Three men from Canberra were issued huge fines for hunting illegally in a nature reserve and crown reserve run by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The fact that they had pig dogs and knives only made the situation worse for them and they will be paying off their fines for some time to come I would imagine. The fines add up to about $3000 each.

The land owners in the area were fantastic help and now know the drill when it comes to reporting the offenders to police so I expect that more fines will be issued in the future.

We also had some fantastic help from our colleagues in Cooma so in the end it was a very satisfying end to a niggling thorn in our sides.

Now to the Local Court Report, Bombala Local Court sat on Thursday, June 18, with only two cases being finalised, they are as below;

• Karen Helstrom from Bibbenluke was fined almost $4000 for three counts of intimidation, one count of malicious damage and one count of trespassing for an incident that occurred in December last year.

• Ivan Slater of Eden received a $500 fine and 6 months disqualification of his drivers licence after being convicted of low range drink driving and negligent driving from October last year.

As stated earlier the next court sittings in Bombala are on Thursday, August 20.

That is it for this week’s update, until next week, please take care and drive

safely.

Yours in Crime Fighting
