Water flowing into reservoir

27 May, 2009 09:23 AM
AN emergency supply of water is now flowing into the Coolumbooka Weir, with the pipeline that was built to pump water from the Bombala River to the reservoir being fully functional as of last Friday, May 22.

The pipeline extends from a deep water hole beneath the Forests NSW offices straight to the weir, and pumping will now be ongoing to meet water demands.

This means the pumps will run for approximately six hours a day to keep pace with the needs of the Bombala township.

Work is now underway to allow for the water to be pumped straight to the treatment works, which will further lessen the risk of evaporation.

While the water can be seen pouring into the weir, the Bombala Council warns that the local water situation is still dire, with the emergency water supply far from endless.

Council gives a very conservative estimate that the water from this particular river hole will last just 60 days if the rate of usage remains the same.

After this point Council will give consideration to carting water, or further pumping from the Bombala River.

Conservative water use is thus of the greatest importance in the area at this point, with Bombala remaining on the strictest Level 5 water restrictions.

This means that water is to be used for essential domestic services only, with the watering of gardens and washing of cars and pavements being prohibited.

A penalty of $220 applies for non-observance of water restrictions.
