Iconic race

04 Nov, 2009 09:33 AM
IN what can be considered a once in a life time opportunity, three local motorcycle racers are embarking on one of the year’s most gruelling motorcycle road races, the Bell-Ray 6hr Endurance Race at Oran Park Raceway on November 22.

Local riders, Peter Campbell, Paul Neal and Wayne Trezise, who were a part of the Mick Cole Motorcycle Racing Team of last year, now have teamed up again to attempt this iconic challenge.

In the 70s and 80s the race, then known as the Castrol 6hr, was as big as the Bathurst 1000 car race as far as the level of competition involved was concerned.

Many famous names went on to international success after competing in the event; names like Wayne Gardener, Mick Doohan, and Tony Hatton just to mention a few.

Interestingly, Kevin Magee, noted sports commentator and world GP winner was a former winner of the 6hr. Kevin has been enlisted to start this year’s race.

The 6hr differs to other domestic endurance racers, in that team can only use one bike during the race. This brings a whole bunch of factors into consideration. Tyre wear, fuel consumption and pit stops are just some of the major concerns for the team.

A pit crew of friends from Mick Cole Motorcycles have stepped up to help out on the day, and also on Saturday for qualifying sessions.

The race, which will be the last ever race held at the famous Oran Park circuit, has attracted top international endurance riders such as Warrick Nolan, Damian Cudlin, and six-time American Motorcycle Association champion, Mat Mladin to the event.

Also many top national riders, the likes of Glenn Allerton and Craig Coxhell, will be there to pit their skills against the tricky 2.3km circuit.

Not only is there going to be a great day of racing on Sunday, but Saturday will have a full program of support racing, trade stalls and off track entertainment to add to the atmosphere.

For more information, go to the Bel-Ray 6hr web site of the6hr.com.au and check out all the info for yourself.

Finally Peter, Paul and Wayne would like to thank their sponsors who have helped them to get the team up to speed. Mick Cole Motorcycles, Bega, Platypus Crash Repairs of Bombala and Murphy’s Transport and Building Supplies also of Bombala.
