SIX teams from Bombala travelled to Bega on Sunday, June 21 to compete in their annual carnival.
Our Under 9s, coached by Jo Wilson competed in the Netta division. The team consisted of Katie Farrell, Jessica Feilen, Karter Hampshire, Mackenzie Phillips, Josie Platts, Akyra Stone, Tahlia Stone and Chloe Wilson.
For many of these players this was their first carnival and they were able to use this opportunity to trial various positions. All players were enthusiastic and demonstrated great team spirit and sportsmanship.
No results were recorded for this age division, however, the girls all received a certificate of participation and a small memento for their efforts.
Our Under 10s were led by Anne Caldwell and Sonia Robinson and consisted of Molly Badewitz, Kayla Hall, Mackenzie Hampshire, Anna Horton, Georgia Jones, Emily Perkins, Charlotte Platts and Teri Roberson.
They had a nervous start to the day with their first game against Bermagui. The girls struggled to get the ball into the circle, however, they finished strongly going down by two goals.
They matched up against Merimbula White in the next game competing against some very tall 11 year olds. To their credit our girls never gave up even though they were defeated 9 to 0.
Strong and well deserved victories against Merimbula Teal and Bega Raiders helped to improve our team spirit and confidence over the next two games.
Bega Blasters, however, were able to show their age and experience over our representative team. To their credit, the girls showed their true character and never give up attitude to keep their opposition to seven goals.
The Under 12s were coached by Sue Morgan and Marni Moreing and consisted of Aimee Badewitz, Hannah Ingram, Tayla Mikula, Tanika Hampshire, Virginia Platts, Darcie Roberson, Hayley Robinson and Tori Wilson.
The girls looked forward to their busy day and right from the first centre pass it was obvious that they were determined to demonstrate their fighting spirit and skills.
They were able to play brilliant netball throughout the day scoring some excellent goals. The majority of games were played against older and more experienced players, however, the girls did not let this deter them and always gave 110 per cent.
The best result of the day was against the Bombala Under 13s with the score line favouring the latter by two goals.
The Under 13s consisted of Jade Crouch, Nicole Hepburn, Lauren King, Katherine Pajuczok, Katie Peisley, Casey Richardson, Rebecca Richardson and Sara Stres. They were coached by Igor Pajuczok and Carol Reid. The girls faced teams from Bega, Merimbula as well as our Under 12s.
The girls showed great determination and sportsmanship throughout the day under various conditions. They matched the skills of the competition and were rewarded with three wins from their six games.
Our Under 15s were our most successful team of the day, being named runners up for their age division.
The team was led by Charmaine Clark and consisted of Tahlia Bedingfield, Ashleigh Maher, Clarra McKinnell, Jessie Morgan, Kaitlin Platts, Lily Platts, Eliza Reed and Jordan Shelley.
The girls demonstrated excellent netball skills and sportsmanship throughout the day.
The first game of the day was against Bermagui. Accurate shooting from Jessie and Tahlia, as well as excellent pressure over the entire court allowed our girls to claim victory 11 goals to 2.
This form was continued during the next games against Cooma and Bega Rockets. Bombala claimed these 8 to 2 and 14 to 2 respectively.
The Bega Jets proved a little more difficult to match. The never say die of our players became evident as they tried their hardest to match their opposition. Unfortunately time was against them with Bega taking the victory 17 to 6.
The girls fought through their fatigue during the rematches with Bermagui and Bega Rockets over the last two games. They proved that their previous wins were not just lucky breaks to win both of these games 7 to 2 and 14 to 5 respectively.
The Opens team was managed by Wendy Robinson and consisted of Melissa Austin, Wendy Crouch, Karen Guthrie, Wendy Hampshire, Julie Jones, Trudie Joseph, Marni Moreing, Michelle Peisley, Robin Perkins, and Carol Reid.
The team performed exceptionally well, playing games against Bega, Bermagui, Cooma and Merimbula. They continued to show the never say die attitude despite the obvious height advantage of their opposition. This determination resulted in many close games as well as a victory against Cooma.
Congratulations to all players. Everyone involved demonstrated great team spirit, determination and sportsmanship.
Finally, we would like to send our sincere thanks to all coaches, parents and umpires. Days like this would be impossible without your support. We look forward to the remainder of our local competition as well as the upcoming Merimbula carnival.
