Again we saw a strong line up of artists turning out for the Annual Cathcart Variety Show last Saturday night, with this year being the 29th event.
The large crowd was provided with top quality entertainment til after 1am in the morning from these artists, being a combination of old favourites and exciting new friends.
This was our first community function using the new shelter and it proved to be an excellent addition to the facilities.
The weather was mostly kind to us and the crowd was privileged to be able to enjoy dining alfresco under the new roof.
There were again quite a few caravans arriving from Friday morning on as this show continues to become a popular stop for those country music fans who travel from show to show around Australia.
Some of our new acts included a family group from Sydney called the Vintage 4, the local up and coming group Hodakary Connection, Tige and Tracy Bobbin, and some very talented walk up artists from the surrounding areas.
The quality of artists performing this year continued to be outstanding and they never ceases to amaze. The committee would once again like to sincerely thank each and every one for the generous donation of their time and excellent talents to make this major fundraiser for the hall the outstanding success that it is.
It is amazing to think that in just one more year’s time this show will celebrate great milestone – its 30th year. There a big plans afoot for next year’s show as the Cathcart community looks forward to sharing their big celebrations.
Some of the old friends to lend their talents to last Saturday’s event with a wide variety of entertainment styles, from country, rock, classical and jazz through to comedy and prose included - Jay Podger, our very capable and entertaining compare and performer in his own right; Lindsey Connelly and his grand daughter Imogene; Alex and Kate Osgood; Ron Ellul (thanks again to Ron for the use of his sound gear, and Patricia for her fantastic work on the mixer); John Podger; Lyn Donchi; Bev Stokes and Heather Jones; Brendon Podger; Darrel Ingram; Tina Podger; Alan Neale; Shelly Heyton (opera trained singer from Sydney); John Edwards; Michael Green; and Sam Elliot.
Thanks as usual must also go to Wilf Giles for his hard work back stage to ensure the smooth running of the show and his work in organising the program for the night. This is a huge, time consuming task, which he completed very efficiently.
Unfortunately we have lost three of the artists who have supported us with their performances in the past since last year’s concert, and we would like to acknowledge their wonderful contribution to our past shows and extend our sympathy to their families. These are Ralph Sims, Alan Madden and Neil Hampshire.
Also again several of our other friends are not as well as they might be and we hope they return to good health soon.
As always it goes without saying that the crowd was again treated to the usual high quality food for dinner and supper, and the committee would like to thank all of the community for their usual generous donations of food and time to create the outstanding meals and hospitality that they are so famous for.
Congratulations again to the Cathcart community on the fantastic, high quality annual event they have again put on. Remember to mark the second Saturday in February 2014 in your diary as the not to be missed 30th Annual Cathcart Variety Show.
