At the time, Ms Gaut was using a shower gel she had bought from a Body Shop at Home party, and when the Ballarat representative for Body Shop at Home Louise O’Neil heard of Ms Gaut’s story she felt compelled to take action.
“Barbara’s story made us realise an opportunity to raise awareness for regular breast checks,” Ms O’Neil said.
She arranged for $2 from every shower gel sold at the Ballarat Body Shop at Home parties to be donated to Ballarat Support 4 Cancer.
A waterproof three-step breast-check card will be attached to the gel’s packaging.
Ms Gaut said she was reluctant at first to publicise her story, but realised she could help other women in a similar situation.
“If it means I can help raise awareness and help another lady then I’m doing a good thing,” Ms Gaut said.
“I have no family history, this can happen to anyone, so we need to send the message out there.”
Ms Gaut was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 months ago and is still receiving treatment.
