LOCAL readers may have noticed a familiar face in the August 15 Cooma-Monaro Express, with former Bibbenluke girl, Penelope Murdoch appearing on the front page.
Penny has completed the very challenging Bachelor of Design course at the Canberra Institute of Technology, and has just co-designed a brand new fashion label with the well known and loved birdsnest.
Following is the Cooma-Monaro Express article by Kirrily Carberry that outlines the exciting new label, Penny’s involvement with it and its recent launch -
‘BIRDSNEST has spread its wings and flown to the next chapter of its story, launching its first fashion collection, That Bird Label.
The Cooma store and online retailer unveiled the collection designed exclusively by birdsnest last week.
It has been a long time dream of birdsnest to create its own fashion label, and now that dream has become reality.
Founder of birdsnest, Jane Cay, said the collection was based on feedback from customers, having surveyed more than 50,000 Australian women.
"Our customer feedback was telling us that there was a gap in the market for affordable styles that lifted the spirits while also answering the body image concerns of women," she said.
"They told us intimate details about their style, including body shape, favourite colours, and style personalities. We know that more than 50 per cent of us think we have tummy issues, and 51 per cent of us love wearing blue. This really gives us an amazing insight into what Australian women want."
A driving force behind the dream has been head buyer and visionary Peige Eber, another Cooma girl with more than 20 years' shop floor and buying fashion experience.
"Hands on experience has taught me the shapes and colours women love to wear. We are drawn to prints because they can lift our mood in an instant and make us stand out from the crowd. This was the founding premise of the label we have had such fun creating," Ms Eber said.
Two talented, young designers worked on the development of That Bird Label under Peige's creative direction and Jane's business intuition.
Hannah Knight and another local from Bibbenluke, Penelope Murdoch, joined birdsnest to design the launch the label after finishing The Canberra Institute of Technology's gruelling Bachelor of Design course.
"It has been an amazing experience, one that I can't wait to continue," Ms Knight said.
Ms Murdoch said the label was a celebration of women.
"It is inspired by the beautiful silhouette of the female body. The fabrics used in That Bird Label are vibrant and expressive. They utilise different prints and celebrate colour. They are designed to capture the wearer's personality and make her feel beautiful and empowered."
The new label features a collection of summer dresses and styles which are fused with handpicked, rich, eclectic, and brightly coloured prints.”
