AT the time of printing this week’s Bombala Times we could name the new Prime Minister of Australia, but we still could not say who had officially won the Federal seat of Eden-Monaro.
Our bellwether electorate has fallen to the incoming government since 1972, but the count between Labo'rs Mike Kelly and Liberals' Peter Hendy was just too close to call by the time of our deadlines.
When it comes to the local district, Mr Hendy was in front in the two candidate preferred count, leading on 57.14 per cent versus Kelly’s 42.86 per cent at the Bombala polling place.
In Delegate the gap was wider, with Hendy leading with 66.26 per cent versus Kelly’s 33.74 per cent, while in Bibbenluke it was a similar story with Hendy taking 65.43 per cent and Kelly 34.57 per cent.
With the initial results varying across the electorate, it all comes down to the postal votes now, and a clear winner may not be revealed until as late as September 20.
Dr Kelly said no matter what happened he could claim a great campaign.
“We couldn't have worked harder,” he said, while saying the national result was disappointing.
