Former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan is not surprised by a poll that shows support for an Australian republic is at less than 40 per cent but sees it as a challenge to republicans to ''redouble efforts'' on the issue. A ReachTEL poll of more than 2100 Australians conducted for Fairfax Media last Thursday found that 39.4 per cent surveyed supported Australia becoming a republic, with 41.6 per cent opposing it and 19 per cent undecided.''What it shows is the nature of the task ahead,'' Mr Swan said.
