The council’s asset manager water and sewerage, Bob McKinnon, estimated the cost of the project to be $60,000.
Work has been underway for a week with the project expected to take a little more than two weeks to complete.
Mr McKinnon said the old water mains were probably about 75 years old and kept breaking.
“It’s part of the council’s ongoing maintenance program,” Mr McKinnon said.
“When we finish one street we move on to another as funds become available.”
The next street to receive a major upgrade was likely to be Mercy Street, he said.
No timetable has been set for that project.
The work also includes an upgrade of the system between the mains and individual water meters, he said.
