Malcolm Lavender from the Bombala Fire Station visited the schools as part of the NSWFB Fire Ed program.
“This was our second year being invited back into the classrooms which is very pleasing,” fire officer Lavender said.
“Our visits have continued to coincide with classroom emergency evacuation drills held at each school.”
The NSWFB Fire ED program is a fire safety awareness program structured specifically to the cognitive ability of children in the age group of 5-12 years.
The children actively participated in demonstrations and discussions on emergency strategies for both at school and at home.
“This year our objective was to develop children’s confidence with the introduction a new
activity to the NSWFB Fire Ed Program,” officer Lavender said.
“In the safe controlled environment of the classroom, children had the opportunity to experience making and listening to a 000 call.”
The NSWFB SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) was on display again with a visual display of a mock search and rescue in the classroom.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to reinforce key safety messages and hopefully discussion at home,” officer Lavender said.
Fire and Rescue NSW’s purpose is to enhance community safety, quality of life and confidence by minimising the impact of hazards and emergency incidents on the people, environment and economy of NSW.
“The best way to keep your family out of harm’s way and identify potential risks is by doing a FRNSW/GIO online home fire safety checklist and making sure you have working smoke alarms and a practised home escape plan,” officer Lavender said.
Other winter fire safety tips include:
• Turning off heaters before going to sleep
• Keeping clothing and other flammable materials at least 1m from heaters and open fires
• Turning off electric blankets before going to sleep
• Not overloading power points
• Not leaving cooking, and other open-flame materials such as cigarettes and candles, unattended.
