Committee chairman, Peter Williams, said a good deal of progress in the management of the town’s old cemetery had been achieved in the past year.
Mr Williams said the major project had been the completion of the memorial wall, dedicated to the pioneer settlers whose grave sites had been lost through the lack of records and other factors.
“In all there has been approximately 40 plaques put on the wall and it is anticipated that there will be a request for more over time,” Mr Williams said in his 2013-2014 report.
Three seats have also been installed around the cemetery area for use by the public.
These seats were originally installed in Maybe Street and were replaced by new ones.
“The committee tried to establish a line of trees along the back roadway, but although a good effort was made to maintain them, due to the dry period and the need for a better watering plan, most trees did not survive,” he said.
Mr Williams thanked the huge contribution made by the committee’s secretary, Cr Diane Hampshire, “whose enthusiasm and drive have been the heart and soul of the committee”.
He also thanked Barry Hines for his consistent effort – especially into the control of the rabbit problem and the RSL Club raffle that raised $800.
Mr Williams said the achievements of the committee had not only been possible through the work of its members but also through the work and financial assistance of the Bombala Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, Rotary Club, RSL, Monaro Tree Nursery, Bombala Shire Council and members of the general public.
“The relationship between the council staff and the committee has been outstanding and a great deal of our success must go to the effort and understanding of Terry Perkins whose help over the years is most appreciated.
“I am sure that the committee members have felt a good deal of satisfaction over the years, just as I have, and I hope that will persist over the future years,” he said.
