Blue skies and a moderate swell greeted fishos for their competition and the majority of entrants stuck to inshore reefs to catch mowies, pigfish and snapper ranging from 1-2kg.
A couple of boats hit the water but their crews could only find perch and one stripy tuna.
“No trophy fish but the perch was very good eating,” Malua Bay Fishing Club weigh master Andrew Turner said.
Flathead numbers seemed to be down at the competition although Jamie Woodward pushed the bowls aside and came up trumps with his 880-gram flathead.
It was a battle with the Clyde as three jewfish were weighed-in on the weekend, a first for the club.
Anthony Turner and Brent Poile were separated by 50 grams but Tim Stewart stole the glory with his 8kg specimen.
“Jewfish seem to be in good numbers at the moment from the river to the beaches,” Turner said.
“After all the rain of late it has fed our estuaries so it should be a good summer for fishing and prawns.”
Harry Hazadontis had been reeling good catches of snapper of late up to 3.5kg but could only manage a 2.11kg model to claim his prize.
The club’s next competition will be held on November 7 and 8.
The club has also issued a challenge to the shire’s other fishing clubs to match its $100 donation to the Snowy Hydro Rescue Helicopter.
“It is a great cause so let’s get behind it and support them as you never know when you or your loved ones may need it,” Turner said.
