With Michelle Farran and Penelope Judge leading this exciting initiative, rehearsals for various events over the next few years have begun.
The choir is a part of the state wide reenactments of the Cooee marches of 1914.
Our local march The Men From Snowy River Recruitment March reenactment will be held in November 2015 but activities associated with this will begin on Sunday, November 2, 2014 in Delegate, where the original march began.
This first event will be the launch of the book The Men from Snowy River.
This event will also feature an information session about the march reenactment and a debut performance by our fledgling choir.
The choir will eventually consist of young people from the five schools in our district, and will also feature drummers, poetry readers and storytellers.
The choir provides a way for under 16 year olds to be a vibrant part of the march.
Because of various child protection and insurance regulations they are not permitted to participate in the march itself.
All of the schools have participated in initial rehearsals and the enthusiasm for the marching song to be sung at the five booklaunch/information sessions is very inspiring.
The children have joined in the spirit of this activity with gusto.
We also encourage the children to be dressed in period costume especially when smaller groups are used.
This is where parents and community members can be involved.
We will need several pinafores for the girls and maybe mob caps so any offers of assistance with sewing would be appreciated.
The other items we could have difficulty with are braces, old felt hats, soft caps and old fashioned straw sunhats.
If you can help please contact the schools or Penelope on 64588243.
You will be able to hear the children singing an original marching song written for the Snowy River Men at the events on November 2, November 9 and November 23 in Delegate, Bombala and Cooma respectively.
They are also singing at the official book launch in Queanbeyan on December 3.
In 2015 the choir will be very busy performing at shows all the way to Goulburn, and taking part in any centenary of Anzac functions.
