A SNAKE sunning itself daily right next to one of the footbridges along the Bombala River Walk has created quite a stir, with some walkers being alarmed and others delighted.

A number of locals who regularly use the riverside path have spotted the snake sunbaking on the large rocks at the bottom stepping stones, most often in the morning.
The snake has appeared so frequently that one resident has even put a sign up on the bridge warning walkers that it might be nearby and to exercise caution in that area.
While it is not known what species of snake it actually is, the reptile has presented no threat to users of the path so far, and locals are advised simply to keep a sensible distance.
In fact, a number of walkers now look forward to trying to spot the snake as they make their way over the footbridge daily, and report that it is usually quite shy and slips away if anyone comes too close.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service reminds the community that snakes are protected by law and play an important role in the environment by keeping mice and other species under control.
“The fact that the snake has taken up residence near the footbridge indicates just how healthy the Bombala River is right now,” NPWS Area Manager, Franz Peters said.
“Once it has become accustomed to walkers making use of the nearby bridge it will simply ignore them.”
