NOTCHING up yet another success within his career, former Bombala local, Mal Stone was awarded the 'Champion Soldier' title at the 6th Battalion Royal Australia Regiment end of year awards ceremony on December 5 last year.

The award is presented to the most outstanding soldier of the year, and Mal earned the title based on his achievements over the past twelve months. These include -
Male Champion 6 RAR fitness competition 'Heelers Hero';
Duke of Gloucester Cup (Singelton, 6 days) - first place 6th Battalion;
3.2 km webbing run during Gloucester Cup - first place (wearing and carrying 15kgs);
1500m 7th Brigade Athletics Carnival - third place;
Military Skills Competition (Canungra, 2 days) - first place 6 Battalion;
7th Brigade 'King of the Hill' (run up and down Mt Enoggera) - first place wearing webbing and carrying a rifle (wearing and carrying around 15kg);
7th Brigade Cross Country - seventh place;
Silver medal Cambrian Patrol- Brecon Beacons, Wales, 36hrs over 60kms by foot wearing and carrying approximately 40kgs;
Sniper concentration - sixth place, Perth;
BFA (basic fitness assessment) and shooting scores throughout the year were of a consistently high level.
Naturally Mal’s family has been very proud of his Champion Soldier award, and were further pleased when Mal was also promoted to Lance Corporal at the awards ceremony.
