In Bega District Court on Monday morning, Judge Jeffreys scheduled Van Ryn's sentencing for Wednesday morning, with the hearing expected to take about 1.5 hours.
Van Ryn pleaded guilty in November 2014 to 12 child sex offences related to attacks on six boys aged eight to 16 at Tathra between 2006 and 2014.
Initially granted bail, he was taken into custody in early December after bail was revoked in a Sydney District Court (BDN, 10/12/14).
Van Ryn, 59, was arrested in Bega in September after six males raised separate allegations in relation to sexual abuse and indecent assault.
He appeared in Bega Local Court on 23 separate matters.
However, the court heard 12 of those charges had been replaced by the more serious charge of "persistent sexual abuse of a child”, which carries a maximum 25 years’ imprisonment.
Van Ryn entered a guilty plea to all charges.
In a decision that brought an angry reaction from some in the community at the time, Van Ryn was granted bail under strict conditions.
However, acting District Court Judge Rodney Madgwick later revoked bail following an appeal by the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions.
"There is a sense that reasonable people in the community may feel something is amiss about a man who acknowledges he's guilty and who faces the certainty of a long period of imprisonment, continuing to be abroad in the community," Judge Madgwick said at the time.
The judge accepted the dual arguments put forward by prosecutors, that Van Ryn's wealth made him an unacceptable risk of flight, and that the lengthy and predatory nature of his offending made him a risk to the community.
He acknowledged the 59-year-old was taking testosterone suppressant medication – known as "chemical castration".
However, of particular concern was while on bail in June after being charged with one offence, Van Ryn allegedly molested one of his victims during a driving lesson.
