The NSW Government has allocated $270,000 for the work which aims to ensure the condition of the highway remains safe for all road users into the future.
The highway will be closed from the base of Brown Mountain to the B double uncoupling bay at the top of the mountain between Monday, March 9 and Friday, March 13 to install a new pipe.
Motorists are advised the highway will be reduced to one lane in the week leading up to the closure and for two weeks after the work to complete the job.
Roads and Maritime is replacing the ageing pipe to ensure the stability of the road.
Motorists are advised to plan their trip as the alternative routes will add significant distances to be travelled and require additional travel time.
The main vehicles affected will be B-doubles, who will need to use Imlay Road which results in a significant detour.
Traffic heading to the coast from the Monaro Highway will be directed to use the Kings Highway to Batemans Bay or Imlay Road through Bombala.
Local road users need to use alternative routes including Cathcart Road from Bibbenluke and Bombala through Candelo and Mt Darragh Road from Bombala to Pambula.
Local traffic will be able to use the highway from Bega up to the base of Brown Mountain.
Electronic message signs will be installed at the top and bottom of the mountain two weeks before work starts to alert motorists of the traffic changes.
Roads and Maritime thanks motorists for their patience while this work is carried out.
