PLANS to build a Platypus Country Visitor and Community Centre in Bombala are a step closer, with the NSW Government awarding $100,000 towards the project.
“This Centre will be a hub to promote and display everything that is special about Bombala and tell the story of this unique area; it will also be a space for the community to house events, exhibitions and cultural activities,” said Member for Monaro, John Barilaro.
“Council has allocated $120,000 for the project; this is another example of the NSW Government and Bombala Council working together to deliver community infrastructure.”
Council explains that the centre will supply expanded visitor information services, provide additional retail space for producers, a potential market area and will feature a gallery space.
“It will also give us the ability to offer interactive spaces for visitors, for example audio on local industries or developments,” said Bombala Council’s Karen Cash.
“We will also be improving the displays in the current centre. It is a very exciting opportunity and will have fantastic benefits for the area.”
Mr Barilaro discussed the project with Council while in town last week and visited the Railway Land where the centre will be located.
“The Platypus Country Visitor and Community Centre will finalise Council’s planned upgrades to the Railway Precinct at Bombala; this precinct has been developed by Council and various community groups as the hub for tourism activities in the area,” he said.
“Congratulations to Bombala Council; I look forward to seeing this exciting new development unfold.”
Upgrade at showground
A $75,000 upgrade to the toilet and change room facilities at the Bombala Showground has been announced by Minister for Sport and Recreation Stuart Ayres and the NSW Footy Facilities Fund.
“Strong sporting teams are a sign of a strong community, and we are incredibly proud of the Bombala Blue Heelers and Bombala High Heelers,” Mr Barilaro said.
“With Group 16 having just kicked off, this announcement could not have come at a better time.
“Better facilities are important to attracting more players and we should be doing everything we can to encourage more people to get out and get active.”
The Footy Facilities Fund is designed to increase player numbers and improve the standard of Rugby League grounds and facilities across NSW.
NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg, said grassroots facilities were crucial to the success of Rugby League.
“We want every participant across NSW to play footy at safe, secure and high quality venues,” Mr Greenberg said.
“This program not only improves facilities at local footy clubs but it provides the services needed to enable more boys and girls, and people with disabilities, to be part of our game.
“And that is crucial because there is a place for everyone in rugby league,” Mr Greenberg concluded.
