The incumbent Member said he’s honoured and humbled to be re-elected by his community, securing around 53 per cent of votes and a swing towards him, despite a ten percent swing against the government across the state.
Led by Mike Baird, the Liberal and Nationals have won 47 seats needed to claim government in the 93-seat parliament.
“I am absolutely thrilled that people have put their trust in me again; most of all I am resolute and determined to keep achieving meaningful results for the community,” said Mr Barilaro.
“My track record of delivery has stood for itself; I’ve had around a one percent swing towards me where most of the state had a swing against them.
“This is week one of the next four years and I’m really excited about that. I’m looking forward to representing the Monaro and pleased this region will continue to have a strong voice in Government.
“We’ve outlined a very positive investment plan across our schools, our hospitals and our roads and mobile black spots for this term of government and now it’s time to start delivering them.”
Mr Barilaro thanked Labor candidate, Steve Whan, describing him as a tough opponent.
“I want to thank Steve for his 12 years of service to this region,” said Mr Barilaro.
“I’m sure he will continue to serve his community in a capacity outside politics and I wish Steve, his wife Cherie and family all the very best for their future endeavours.”
Mr Whan officially conceded defeat to Mr Barilaro outside his home in Karabah on Sunday afternoon.
"Obviously it's very disappointing... but I would like to thank all of the people who did give me their vote," he said. He also paid tribute to all passionate Labor supporters elsewhere.
Mr Whan did acknowledge the hard work put in by Mr Barilaro.
"Credit where it's due, John's worked very hard for this result and I wish him luck for the next four years," he said.
Mr Whan said the Nationals had to promise "an awful lot" in their election campaign for Monaro and that the pressure would be on to deliver for the community.
Mr Whan served as the Labor member for Monaro from 2003 to 2011, before being appointed to the Legislative Council where he filled several shadow cabinet positions. He will now exit politics after 18 years.
