THE Talbot Transport Bombala Campdraft was this year held on the weekend of March 27, 28 and 29.
Friday kicked off in less than desirable conditions with the two Encouragement Drafts kindly sponsored by D & M Automotive Bombala, and the Ladies draft generously sponsored by Bombala IGA.
The wind was howling and all were a tad concerned the secretary’s box may just blow away! The dust was flying and the wind was cool, but despite all this the cattle were great and the standard of drafting was high.
Taking out the win in Encouragement 1 was Colin Tetley and Sheriff with an 82, and Aaren Neale and Silhouette won the 2nd Encouragement on a score of 85.
The wind really picked up in time for the Bombala IGA Ladies draft but that didn’t slow our ladies down. Keryn Gardiner and Swanky placed 1st with a score of 166.
Saturday brought with it a beautiful Monaro morning perfect for some competitive drafting. The Feed Shed Bungendore sponsored maiden drafts were first up and served up some great runs and high scores.
Ben Walsh and One Moore Percent on a 165 took out the win in the Maiden 1, with Brad Malone and Rush placing 1st on a 164 in the 2nd maiden.
With a short break, we then went on with the kids drafting after lunch. The Junior draft was kindly once again sponsored by Alan Rutherford Transport & Frank Coonan.
This draft bought with it a hive of activity with ponies, kids and “Parent Strappers” all milling around the side of the camp.
The dust was thick in the afternoon but our fearless future champions didn’t take a backwards step. Amy Clarke and Statesman placed 1st with a whopping score of 82.
The Bombala Trail Horse Riders sponsored Juvenile draft was up next and again saw some incredible drafting. These kids are snapping at the heels of the open drafters and need to be closely watched. Joel Clarke and Riley took out the win on a massive 90.
The feature event of the weekend was last on Saturday afternoon being the Talbot Transport Open Draft. We are incredibly grateful to Norm Talbot and his team for once again coming on board as a major sponsor. Norm and his drivers work tirelessly over the weekend to make our draft possible and their efforts are hugely appreciated.
The Open draft this year was won by Ian Laurie and Dulcie on a 176.
Ben Walsh and Heartache won the Terry Niven Memorial Open Top Cutout, kindly sponsored by Reg Tetley and Kerry Girvan.
Dinner was again provided by our hardworking committee, with the presentations and raffles following. The food was delicious and great night was had by all, and by the look of some of the heads the next morning maybe the night was a little too good!
The fog set in early Sunday morning and delayed the start of the Sharpe Fullgrabe & Co sponsored Novice Draft by half an hour. It was chilly morning but the runs come out hard and fast.
The ground held up well and some fantastic drafting was on show for the day. Chrissie French & Amity took out first place with a score of 176.
The last event of the weekend was the Foodworks Bombala Open Draft. The sun was hot by now and the dust was thick, however the entertainment was about to begin.
The Open draft concluded with a three way run off for 1st place between Ella Williams, Ian Laurie and our president Phil Collins. Young Ella and Cruze took out the win after managing to piece together a run and racking up a score of 248, with Ian placing 2nd and Phil 3rd.
Phil Collins and Switch also proudly won the Bruce and Erica Niven Memorial Trophy for the best local cut out with a camp score of 23. The trophies for both memorial drafts are on display at Landmark Bombala.
The committee of Bombala Campdraft would like to thank the numerous helpers over the weekend in the kitchen, yards and announcers box, who gave up their time to support our campdraft again this year.
An extra special thank you goes to our sponsors and cattle donors, whom without Campdrafting as a whole would not exist. Your ongoing support of our campdraft in particular is greatly valued and we hope to have you all on board again.
To our hardworking committee thank you all very much and let’s start working on making next year bigger and better.
