Residents awoke on Friday to a heavy police presence in town with officers establishing crime scenes at Boyd Street and Kirke Street following the deaths of two men.
As police continued with their investigations throughout the day, a number of residents spoke of their shock at the morning's proceedings.
"I walked down into the town and it was a bit of shock to hear what had happened," local Gary Hayes said.
At about 3.15am, a 32-year-old man sustained a fatal gunshot wound at a residence in Boyd Street.
Police have been told another resident of the house, a 28-year-old man, awoke to find an intruder inside the home.
These two men became involved in an altercation, before the 28-year-old ran from the house and got into his car in an effort to escape.
As he was driving away, a shot was fired at the vehicle. The bullet grazed his hand, causing a minor injury.
Police from Monaro Local Area Command were called to the address, and launched an investigation.
About 8.10am Friday, police located the body of a 58-year-old man inside a vehicle parked on Kirke Street, Nimmitabel. The man had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Early investigations suggest the man in the car was the alleged intruder at the Boyd Street home.
The small town was left reeling following the death of the 32-year-old with residents saying he was well known.
"He was quite well liked in town," Mr Hayes said.
As locals started to go about their day, a group gathered along Boyd Street expressing their dismay at what had unfolded.
One resident who lived only a few hundred metres away from the incident said they were shocked to see the street cordoned off as they were not woken by the events that took place.
Officers from the Monaro Local Area Command said no other parties are being sought in relation to the death of the 32-year-old man at Nimmitabel.
A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
