Word has only just started to spread, and already we have eight local teams joined up for the event, with at least 40 people set to take part and money already flowing in.
Put basically, the relay sees teams of 10 to 15 people get together and fundraise year-round. Everyone then meets at the event to celebrate the amazing fundraising achievements of the past year and actually get into the relay.
In our case this will take place at the Bombala Exhibition Ground in late November, with teams participating in a relay-style walk or run, challenging themselves to stay on the track overnight.
Of course this in itself would be entertaining enough, but participants in the relay are urged to add even more fun by dressing up to a team theme. This means we could have everything from pirates to clowns and even zombies setting up camp and making their way around the showground!
The teams so far include the ‘Craigie Crushers’, ‘Bandicoot’s Long Haul’, ‘ Burpsnartz’, ‘High Heelers’, ‘Shake n Bake’, ‘Walkie Talkies’ and ‘Walking on Empty’ - and you can make your own of course.
These teams have collectively set the goal to raise $15,000 this year, and they have already managed around 15% of this, having bagged a total of $2,330.45 for the cause in a short time.
In the case of ‘Bandicoot’s Long Haul’, the team have exceeded their personal goal of $1,500 thanks to the generosity of the community following the sad passing of Bryan ‘Bandicoot’ Cootes for whom they are relaying.
There’s still over 180 days to go until Bombala gets relaying on the weekend of November 28, so everyone is encouraged to consider forming a team, joining one of the existing gangs or at least donating.
Remember, Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them. Relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer, and of course to raise funds for the vital services the Cancer Council provides.
Each person on the team pays a registration fee, which includes a shirt and breakfast in the morning. There are no age limitations or fitness requirements – Relay For Life is suitable for everyone.
