The iconic four day party of muscle cars, music and entertainment will take place on January 7-10 and is in its 29th year.
An integral part of Summernats are the burnouts and for 2016, the competition is ready to shred.
Engines will roar, clouds will form and rubber will melt as dozens of Australia’s elite burnout specialists battle for glory as the undisputed Burnout Master, part of the world’s premier burnout competition, the Liqui-Moly National Burnout Masters.
‘Doughnuts’, ‘tip-in’s’ and ‘heli’s’ are just some of the lingo on the lips of the judges and the fans as the competition gets underway with the Last Chance Shootout Wild Card Burnouts on Thursday.
Three Wild Card entries are up for grabs for drivers who have not previously qualified for the main event during the years competitions.
Friday afternoon will kick off with the Liqui-Moly Summernats Burnout Eliminations, with the Top 50 being invited back for Sunday’s final.
Incredibly, top burnout machines can cost in excess of $200,000 and produce over 1,500hp, often revving to 9,000rpm plus.
“I’ve seen as high as 340km/h of tyre speed,” Steve Nogas said about his well-known matt black Camaro ‘Killa-B’, showing top burnout machines are heavy duty weapons of tyre frying destruction.
One of the legends of the sport and Australian burnout royalty is Gary Myers who has won the coveted title seven times over the span of his career and knows what it takes to win.
“The Summernats Liqui-Moly National Burnout Masters is the holy grail of burnout events. You have to do something special to impress the judges and crowds to take the title,” Myers said .
