The raffle was part of an ongoing fundraising campaign towards the construction of a replica of Ben Boyd’s vessel ‘Wanderer’, with the project’s fundraising chairman Jon Gaul delighted with the money raised.
“This raffle funding is going towards fencing the replica construction site beside the Seahorse Inn at Boydtown, renovating an amenities block, and meeting costs of transporting the massive 22 metre Wanderer keel log 80 kilometres from Bombala to Boydtown some time over the next few weeks,” Mr Gaul said.
Mr Gaul thanked everyone in the Sapphire Coast communities as well as holiday makers and cruise ship visitors who bought tickets to support the raffle, which raised $5000.
The raffle’s first prize was a $3000 pedal kayak, won by Bombala resident Tiger Bobbin.
Mr Bobbin was not at the Seahorse Inn when his ticket was drawn, instead hearing the news after returning home from work on Sunday.
Mr Bobbin said his wife received a phone call from a Wanderer Replica Project representative, and was as keen as anyone to enjoy the winnings.
“She’d bought one ticket for the draw, and I’d bought three, and she’d written my name on all four tickets.
“So now she’s saying it might be her ticket that won!”
And it’s not just Mr Bobbin’s wife who is vying for first dibs when the kayak is delivered this weekend.
“My son reckons it would be good for him too,” Mr Bobbin laughed.
While the Bobbin family work out their kayaking schedule, the Wanderer Replica Project is focusing on its next raffle drive which starts this week coinciding with the arrival of Pacific Eden into Snug Cove, with a black opal and paddle board up for grabs.
Mr Gaul said another important event on the calendar is a “project launch” planned for the Easter school holidays at the Seahorse Inn, to better introduce the community to the replica project.
