At Sapphire Coast Turf Club on Sunday, July 3, the sun was out and the 18-degree day felt more like spring than the depths of winter.
A good crowd supported the seven-race meeting with the 33 per cent increase in prize-money attracting strong fields.
Horse of the year went to Therese, trained by Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones, a partnership that also claimed trainer of the year.
Rachel Hunt was named apprentice of the year as well as rider of the year.
Race 1 BRADLEY PHOTOGRAPHERS MAIDEN PLATE (1208 METRES) saw MRS WILLY NILLY get the cash, trained by Richard Clarke and ridden by Michael Travers. The four year old mare traveled sweetly back in fourth position and came with a well timed run.
Race 2 MERIMBULA JEWELLERS MAIDEN PLATE (908 METRES) saw the first starter and favorite ANNIE PRU get the money, trained by Aaron Clarke and ridden by Adrian Layt. The two year old filly raced on the speed outside the leader and proved to strong.
Race 3 PAT NEVILLE'S TWOFOLD SECURITY SERVICES BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1408 METRES) saw this years Bega Cup winner GREEN AVENTURINE make an appearance and the Brian Adams trained mare didn't disappoint. Settled back in the field Michael Travers relaxed the horse and came with a swooping run from second last on the turn to take out the win giving Michael Travers an early double.
Race 4 FACEBOOK.COM/SAPPHIRECOASTTURFCLUB CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1408 METRES) saw PERIZADA trained by Ron Weston & John Nisbet and ridden by John Kissick take out the race. The mare was travelling well behind a hot pace and sprinted nicely when the run appeared.
Race 5 SAPPHIRE WINTER SPRINT (1008 METRES) saw BURRADOO trained by Mick Miladinovic and ridden by Brendan Ward come with a well timed run after racing midfield in a race full of classy sprinters. Brendan Ward had a lap full of horse at the furlong and looked like the winner a long way from home.
Race 6 PAT NEVILLE'S TWOFOLD SECURITY SERVICES BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP (1608 METRES) saw the Favorite TOKEN OF LOVE trained by Barbara Joseph & Paul Jones and ridden by apprentice Rachel Hunt. Rachel settled the filly beautifully on the fence midfield and after a cozy run there was plenty in the tank when the gap appeared and the filly went on to win by close to seven lengths.
Race 7 SAPPHIRECOASTTURFCLUB.COM.AU CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1208 METRES) felt like groundhog day with THERESE getting the money trained by Barbara Joseph & Paul Jones and ridden by the in form apprentice Rachel Hunt. It was a case of go to the lead and improve your position as Rachel jumped the mare two length clear straight out of the gates and maintained the gap on the line winning by two lengths giving both trainer and riders a race to race double along with Sapphire Coast Turf Club premierships.
