Junior netball
The Sapphire Coast under 15 girls netballers can hold their heads up high after a top five finish in the State Age Championships last weekend. Four teams with players from Merimbula, Bega and Bombala, made the trek to Wollongong to play against teams from all over the state. Over three days each team played around 20 games to find out who would become the next State Champions. While none of the teams came out of top, the under 15s played spectacularly throughout the tournament to finish in fifth place with 13 wins, four losses and one draw.

The team’s coach, Tyjana Thelan, said she couldn’t be prouder of her girls.
“We had a very up and down season, so I'm extremely proud that the girls pulled together as a team. They showed real fight and class against some really tough and slick teams,” Thelan said.
Thelan said her team’s defensive pressure was outstanding with key defender Kimmy De Jong as a stand out, keeping the team in games they could have lost. The other teams also played well with the U12s coming 17th with five wins and 16 losses; the U13s came in 12th with nine wins, 11 losses and two draws; and the U14s finished 18th with four wins and 16 losses.
