Matthew Platts was born in 1917 and was in his 99th year.
Recently, on Saturday, July 9, 2016, the death occurred at the RAAFA Retirement Village in Bull Creek, Perth, Western Australia of Matthew Platts, the last surviving child of George Platts (1883-1965) and Emily Eliza Platts (nee Nicholson) (1882-1972).
Matt’s grandfather was William Platts (1856-1925), a local pioneer who came from South Wingfield in Derbyshire, England to the Bombala area in the late 1870’s, establishing the family property at Mountain Top.
His grandmother was Marija (Mary) Emma Platts (nee Holzhauser).
Matt was born on December 29, 1917, the fifth of nine children and grew up on the property at Mountain Top.
In his teens he left the farm and worked as a jackaroo and farm hand at local properties as well as properties around Forbes.
He joined the RAAF in 1941 and did service for his country in Moritia, Balipakan and Borneo, he was in Darwin during the third raid and the SW Pacific during the bombing of Korea.
On discharge he was in 23 Squadron.
After marrying in December 1945, Matt settled in Wagga Wagga raising his family before moving to Balgowlah, Sydney in 1965.
On his retirement, he moved to Mt Claremont and Bull Creek in Perth, Western Australia.
Matt was a much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
His wife Sheilah passed away in 2001.
Matt is survived by his six children, Denise (Mrs Plaisted - Nedlands, Perth), Anne (Mrs den Heijer - Melville, Perth), Catherine (Mrs Vickridge - Samson, Perth), Brian (Mundarring - Perth), Peter (South Penrith - Sydney) and Neil (Kinross - Perth) as well as 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
His funeral service took place at the City Heart Church, Bibra Lake, Perth on Friday, July 15.
