The new tall, black fence along McMillan Road has already gone in and now council will work on erecting chain mesh fence the rest of way around the oval, including in bushland to the rear, eventually fully encompassing the oval area.
Both the AFL and NRL codes preferred grounds to be enclosed during finals matches and so there was every chance that Narooma could be hosting more finals games, the councillors said. The fencing would also make the oval more attractive for events such as concerts, fairs and other events.
Clr Brown said the fence at the front would remain open for general usage and would only be closed during events such as footy grand finals or any concerts or events at the oval.
“Being more attractive for event organisers should bring more events and people to town who spend money on accommodation and restaurants,” he said.
Clr Burnside said this was another example of funds raised from the special rate variation being put back to benefit the community.
The full fencing project unfortunately may not be complete in time for the footy finals this year, but should be completed within the next few weeks.
