“It's a good story about Oz enterprise. Reportedly caught 80 miles off coast. New boat, top rig, big investment. And keeping local industry moving.” Richard said if local boats don’t catch the fish, foreign boats will move in. The catch was being inspected by a Fisheries officer.
Georgia Poyner meanwhile had a great day up off Tuross a couple of days ago, out-fishing her dad. “It’s weird how you can fish an area for years and years and then on one day you can experience something you never have before.”
Despite the green conditions, she caught a couple of big bearded cod, two silver dory and a few snapper, the biggest one on the very last mushy pilchard. Dad Jon said it is all about working very small areas accurately once you see the fish on the sounder. “Some of these patches look like one small rock which you have to get the bait right onto with wind and tide to consider.”
Skipper Nick from the charter boat Playstation meanwhile reported heaps of albacore swimming around the boat on Saturday. They also caught and released a protected fish eastern blue devil fish at Tuross on Sunday bottom fishing for snapper.
Graham from TackleWorld Moruya reports there’s plenty of blackfish getting around on weed flats opposite quarry wharf on the Moruya River and further down towards the entrance try floating some peeled prawns or live nippers along the edges to tempt them to bite. Further up the system there’s been a few bream and odd flathead coming in from around hospital flats.
At Tuross, there are bream are being caught around the Four Ways try using some hard bodies around the oyster leases in the back bays just remember to tighten that drag. Salmon are being caught throughout the system – it’s a bit hard to find them at first but once you do there plenty of fun to be had using smaller metal slices and soft plastics should see them biting.
Off the rocks and beaches, Graham reports there’s some good size drummer and bream coming in off the main headland with prawns being the favourite bait of the day. Some good size tailor and salmon are coming in off the Moruya rock wall even some small snapper are hanging around with them using the ever reliable salted pillie should see some action.
Offshore, he reckons there are some decent sized kingfish are hanging around the inshore reefs. There’s still plenty of tuna getting around out wide trolling big deep divers and also cubing have been getting the goods so dust off the big gear and have a crack at them.
NSGFC report – All enjoyed the soup on a cold winter’s night on Friday and many thanks to the ladies for preparing the delicious soups. Member Terry Vincent has just returned from a trip to Perth where he had a chance to do some fishing out from Two Rocks Marina north of Perth with skipper Troy Clugston. He caught a number of fish including Sampson fish, dhufish, gummy shark, breaksea cod and rock cod. The best catch was a Sambo around 42kg. “Sambo took around 40 minutes to land, it was a very strong and worthy fighter. It was too heavy for me to lift up due to a sore shoulder and Troy lifted it for the photo”. The catch was unusual because there were two fish captured on the one hook, our speculation was that the first fish, a breaksea cod around 0.3kg, first took the bait and then the Sambo grabbed the cod. The fish were captured whilst drifting over a rocky bottom in around a depth of 20 meters. The Sambo was released after the photo session Well done Terry! The Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club AGM is fast approaching on Aug. 26. A new committee will be the result of this AGM so please, if you would like to contribute to the club by being on this committee, put the required form into the club asap. As usual the club rooms will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. – Jan Hemmingsen
