Foundation member, Lena McCoy was amongst other honoured guests, such as Lana Withers, Janet Witts, Sophie Remington and Jean Parkes.
THE Bombala RSL Women’s Bowling Club marked its 50th anniversary in style on Tuesday, October 16, welcoming a series of special guests to a day of bowling and celebration at the Bombala RSL Club.
Indicating the significance of the occasion, the State President of the NSW Women’s Bowling Association, Patricia Reynolds travelled from Sydney for the day, while Bega Imlay District President, Margaret Hill and District Representative, Kay Scrivener were also amongst the guests.
These ladies were introduced to the Bombala Women’s Bowling Club President, Glad Hurley, who also welcomed a number of other visiting and local bowlers to enjoy morning tea.
The cards were then called and teams were formed for the triples, although the ladies could only hit the greens for a shortened 14 ends due to the terrible winds on the day.
From here it was on to pre-dinner drinks, which were enjoyed before the bowlers headed down to the beautifully decorated auditorium to join with the remainder of their 50 or so lunch guests.
These included representatives of the Men’s Bowling Club, the RSL Club Board and a series of former bowlers, with a number of ladies coming from Currawarna for the anniversary.
In her speech, Mrs Hurley gave special welcome to these former bowlers, who included foundation member, Lena McCoy as well as life members such as Jean Parkes.
An apology letter was also read out from 103 year old Grace Eppelstun who was unable to make it to the day, but spoke of her many fond memories of her bowling years.
Mrs Hurley touched on the changes that have taken place throughout 50 years of women’s bowling in Bombala, with regulations concerning uniforms and ladies in the club having been altered considerably.
State President, Patricia Reynolds also shared a few words to congratulate the local women’s bowling club on the anniversary, making the point that the existing harmony between the ladies and the men’s club is something valuable to maintain.
Mrs Reynolds presented Merit Pins to Gwen Campbell, Betty Cowell, Betty Lomas and Moira Tindale for service to the club, while Mrs Hurley was also pleasantly surprised to be presented with a pin.
The cutting of the 50th anniversary commemorative cake was an important feature of the lunch, with Mrs Hurley, Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Hill doing the honours.
Of course a beautiful meal was shared, prizes won and presentations of gifts made, with the day proving a fitting and pleasant way to reflect on the last 50 years of bowling and friendship in Bombala.
