On June 8, 1973 Lynette White was at home with her 11-week-old baby boy when a man burst inside her Coogee unit in Sydney's eastern suburbs and terrorised her.

The 26-year-old was made to partially undress at knifepoint before someone delivering baby nappies outside her front door disturbed the attacker.

He then stabbed Mrs White at least 11 times and fled.

When husband Paul White arrived home from work that night, he found his wife's body lying a metre away from their son in his cot.

Ten months later, on April 22, 1974, 20-year-old Maria Smith was raped, gagged and strangled after answering a knock at the door of her Randwick home.

Ms Smith had been married for only a few weeks and her husband had left for work earlier that morning.

Police believe Ms Smith's attacker may have asked the student teacher for a pencil and paper in an attempt to get inside the home.

Similarities between the murders brought the two cases under the same investigation – Strike Force Tourmaline – with the unsolved homicide team.

Following a story in The Sun-Herald last week detailing new evidence uncovered in the investigation, two women have come forward with their own experiences.

It is understood one woman has told police she was living in Coogee around 1973-1974 when a stranger knocked on her door.

The woman, who was at home by herself with her children, told police the stranger asked for a pen and paper and claimed to be looking for a neighbour.

The woman pretended to call out to her husband and the man left.

Before the unexpected visit, an unidentified man had called the woman and told her he knew she was at home alone.

Robyn, who asked for her surname not to be published, was also home by herself with her newborn son between March and July in 1974 when she answered a knock at the door of her Mount Street, Coogee apartment.

A man claimed to have been sent to her house by her neighbour, whose name he knew, and offered to help fix her TV reception.

When he asked if she was home alone, and told her not to be scared, Robyn lied and said her husband was sick in bed.

"I remember being so frightened that night," she told Fairfax Media.

"I thought he was going to come in. All I had was a broom and I just sat next to my baby until my husband came home."

When Robyn approached her neighbour about the man, she was met with confusion.

"I felt embarrassed because I didn't let him in and I said to her 'I'm sorry I didn't let your friend in'," she said.

"She said 'I don't know what you're talking about'."

Recently unsolved homicide detectives revisited the scene of Ms White's murder and discovered blood under the carpet.

The bloodstains are undergoing forensic testing. Investigators are looking at one theory that the killer may have cut himself during the frenzied attack.

Strike Force Tourmaline is also investigating a number of sexual assaults that occurred in the eastern suburbs around the same time.
