The riders and passengers of 45 pre-1950 Girder Fork motorbikes had a great weekend in Cooma, and on the Monaro in last weekend’s Girder Fork Rally. The rally was also distinguished by there being five women riders.

Over the weekend, the riders, their bikes and sidecar passengers travelled a variety of Monaro roads including a trip to Ando, returning via the spectacular Snowy River Way and the Maffra-Bobundra Road. The total distance covered by the bikes over the weekend was about 315 km, including a ‘warm-up’ ride on Friday afternoon.
Best bike was judged by the other riders to be Bernie and Alison Medway’s 1918 Regnis sidecar, and the best ‘outfit’ (sidecar) was judged to be Ken Cross’s 1940 Speed Twin Triumph.
Junior Driver Development Motorkhana this Sunday
This coming Sunday (October 23) there is a unique opportunity for junior drivers (14 to 17 years) to learn car control in a controlled and safe environment as Cooma Car Club conducts a Motorkhana/Training Day in conjunction with CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sports). The Motorkhana is Day One of the Car Club’s 2016 Junior Development Program.
The training day is at the ‘Longhouse’, Polo Flat Road, Cooma. Eligible participants will be juniors (14 to 17) years who have not previously held a CAMS licence, with a possible view to entering motorsport at a grass roots level.
Participants will first learn some practical car maintenance in a classroom prior to hands on experience (vehicle familiarisation on one of the club cars). This will be followed by a motorkhana event, where participants will learn some car control and get to experience how a car reacts at low speeds.
The second event (of the Junior Development Program) will be a Hillclimb at Mt Gladstone in Cooma on Saturday, November 26. Participants will be able to experience car control at higher speeds in a safe controlled environment, with an instructor in the car with them until they feel confident enough to have a solo run.
Participants may supply their own vehicles, which are only required to meet basic safety standards, or may use one of the several club cars that will be made available.
Entry fee for both events is $30, for which they will receive a CAMS L2SJ licence, allowing them to enter any similar events in the following 12 months.

Other events this spring
The Southern Cross Anniversary Car Rally is passing through Cooma on Friday, November 11. The drivers and cars will be at the Cooma Car Club Clubhouse from 7.30am to 9am for breakfast.
Cooma Car Club’s bi-annual Surf to Summit Rally is on the weekend November 12-13 .
The next Mount Gladstone Hill Climb events are over the weekend November 26-27. On Saturday there will be untimed runs with an instructor for junior (U18) drivers, ‘Come and Try’ timed runs for drivers 16+ who have no previous motorsport experience and timed runs for Classic cars (30 years and older). Sunday will be a regular Hillclimb including entries from drivers doubling up from Saturday’s Snowy Mountains 1000.
