There were finally some kingfish caught at Montague Island on Saturday, with a few legal fish among the smaller 60cm models. Sand flathead catches around the island also continue to be excellent, while there is the odd snapper on the reefs to the north and south. Salmon have been scarce on the beaches, but try up at Potato Point and at 1080 Beach.

Scotty at Bermi Bait & Tackle reported last week that the surface lure fishing continues to hot up in Wallaga Lake with flathead taking a liking to Berkley Scum Dog lures. “Some nice bream off the surface also however soft plastics still did the most damage with the Zman 2.5" Grub doing most of the damage. Flathead remain good for most boaters fishing off Beares Beach in 50m of water with the odd gummy also. The return of some green slime in the water made fishing a little difficult for those bottom fishing.”
The fishing is also improving in Narooma’s Wagonga Inlet. Conny and David posted a pic of a “prehistoric girl” that went 73 cm, almost 3kg, and was caught on a 3kg line in Wagonga Inlet. “Couldn't get a close up on the brag mat, as I couldn’t get far enough away from her to get it all in! Wish I could take credit...but all I did was haul her into the boat. Well done David!” Even better to know the big girl was released.
Now here are the reports from our local fishing clubs:
Dalmeny Fishing Club – Dalmeny Fishing Club hosted a Mummaga Lake Fish Off as part of the national ‘Gone Fishing Day’. Thank-you to all the parents, grandparents, children and club members who braved the blustery conditions on the shores of Mummaga Lake. Click here for all the action. We had a great roll up of about 40 people. A big thank-you to the organisers for the day and club members and also a huge thank-you to Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler for your generous sponsorship. The club held its monthly barbecue back at Club Dalmeny. Our Men's Winner for the day was Pat Maher with 140 points; Lucky Angler was Matt Close. This Saturday, Oct. 22 at Club Dalmeny at 6pm is the annual Dalmeny Seafood Night. There are only a few tickets left so don't miss out on a great night . $30 for Dalmeny Fishing Club members, $40 for non members. – Kim Budin
NSGFC report – The Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club trivia night went off well on Saturday night thanks to Charlie Bettini and his daughter, just tell her not to call us “oldies” as we are “senior citizens” if you please! Thanks also to Sue Waldock and the ladies for providing a delicious supper. NSGFC members participated in DPI NSW's ‘Gone Fishing Day’ on Sunday. Members fished Wagonga Inlet and Corunna Lake for catches of tailor, bream and salmon, while John Scott at the Windermere Classic got a nice golden perch and catfish. Val McCallum got her first entry into our length-only yearly comp with a salmon and bream. The morning’s fishing ended with a clubhouse barbecue. It seems that we may have to re-name our club the Narooma Sport and Rowing Club since I am no longer alone in the training for rowing! John Cathor has now joined me in training after deciding to row back from the back of the inlet for a couple of hours after motor failure, only gaining about eight centimeters with each stroke! Lucky a kind boater took pity on him and gave him a tow back to the clubhouse. As usual the NSGFC rooms, situated on the inlet near the restaurants, will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. – Jan Hemmingsen
Bermagui Anglers – Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club members met up on Sunday for a social barbecue, which followed the weekend fishing comp with excellent results. Both on and offshore rewards were won with John Symes’ offshore heaviest mixed bag of morwong, leatherjacket and flathead. The onshore was the pleasure of Robert Brown with dusky flathead and salmon. President Fran congratulated the winners, welcoming home those members who had been travelling away. A big thank-you to the cooks and members for their delicious salads. The usual raffle was a winner for John’s wife, Gwen Symes. – Gone Fishin’
