Rohann Stephens and family just spent a week holidaying in Naroooma and had a fat time exploring our local waterways, according to the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler. He caught and released an 85cm beauty, one of many others caught on a Squidgy Prawn in Mummaga Lake.
Bermi Bait & Tackle is reporting plenty of good sized garfish on offer in most of our lakes at the moment. “The absolute ultimate fish to start most kids obsession and great eating too.”
Wallaga Lake is producing some nice dusky flathead where most areas had bumped up to over 20 degrees for the first time since winter. Plenty of mullet and other baitfish about too.
Summer whiting are getting on the job as the days warm up. A fast, constant retrieve will have them hitting surface lures and punching well above their weight on light gear.
Australian bass fishing continues to be great and Bermagui local Andy Caves has been getting a few more crackers caught on his very own Kid Vicious Spinnerbaits.
Out at Montague Island there were reports of some good snapper and the odd legal size kingfish last week, with a few kingfish just under the size limit. Bermi Bait & Tackle staffer Kevin Facey had a good day last Thursday.
“Caught eight snapper of which I kept the four around 45cm. The kings were just under. Two on a jig and one on the light snapper gear. Seals were a problem. They took any live bait I put down,” Kevin reported to us. “I did get some stonker snappers at the island on Tuesday plus one legal king. There have been quite a few legals caught over the past week. It seems as though you just have to be lucky with your timing as they're not on all day.”
Charter Fish Narooma got onto the legal kingfish last Monday and reported: “Fished Monday and managed half a dozen legal kingfish and plenty of rat kings, not big fish only ranging from 65cm to 75cm the legal fish but a nice early start to the season, most fish coming off the surface either on poppers of livebaits making for exciting fishing, reef fishing remains very consistent along with getting a good feed of flatties on the way home!”
Now the rest of report comes from our fishing club contributors:
Bowlo Fishing Club – Members of the Bowlo Fishing Club rolled up in good numbers for this month’s comp with weighmasters Greg, Peter and Wayne kept very busy. Saturday was a bit of a wipe out with the wind but there were quite a few on both charters on Sunday. Fishing was okay at the island with both boats scratching up a feed. But the good fishing was at Potato Point out wide with good reds being caught. The beaches at Tilba seem to be the pick as was 1080 Beach with salmon and bream. Winners for the month were Mick Kavic as the overall winner with Peter Shakeshaft, Bec and Shorty Smart, Randall and Brenda Setzer, Greg Tiffen and son Will, and Clare and Adam Giffen all collecting a prize. The best was young Tom Smart who had his first trip on Sea Eagle and with the last drop of the trip managed a double hook up. Next comp is Dec. 2-4 and it’s time to get ready for our Christmas party again on Dec. 18 in the park, same as last year. In other reports, there are rats at the island on the south end and the good snapper are up north. Last dark the prawns were doing okay with it being no trouble to get a few kilo in an hour at Corunna with them a good size and I also heard Brou has small ones, so next dark it could be worth another look before the visitors arrive. So till next comp, tight lines. – Fishfingers
NSGFC report – Sixteen Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club members and friends spent three days last week at beautiful Wee Jasper on the shores of Burrinjuck Dam. The weather sparkled with bright sunny days although windy at times. With all the rain, the dam was 94 per cent full and the countryside an unbelievable lush green, quite stunning vision for all. The carp were the bulk of the catch with redfin the other species caught. Several big fish were lost, perhaps cod. Largest carp went 71cm or about 4kg. Estimates of up to 150 fish caught during the visit. If you've never been up that way, highly recommended, especially the way the countryside is looking at the moment. – Les Waldock
Bermagui Social Anglers – Members of the Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club are reminded that the on and offshore heaviest mixed bag comp is on this weekend November 11-13. President Fran’s presentation for the winners will be at the Sunday barbecue get together at 12.30pm. Final arrangements will be the order of the day with our annual Christmas get-away at Wallaga Lake Caravan Park on November 26-27. So let’s GO FISHIN’
