Once again the Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club had the pleasure of hosting a delightful group of young people from CanTeen for a weekend of fishing and boating on Wagonga Inlet.

The CanTeen organisation helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, are also helped by youth-specific treatment teams.
NSGFC each year hosts young people recovering from cancer by taking them out on the Narooma inlet for some fishing fun.
It started on Saturday with a short talk by Liz from Narooma fisheries on rules and regulations and fish species.
Following that Anneke and Malcolm Campbell from Fishcare, along with our hard working club volunteers, helped them to tie knots and rig fishing rods.
They then took the kids out on the jetties and piers for some serious fishing. As the tide receded on the flats they pumped some nippers which is always a lot of fun and enjoyed by all.
Later in the afternoon, Charlie Bettini took them for a cruise around the inlet on the Wagonga Princess. They also fished from John Scott's boat and were rewarded with some good catches.
Narooma Charters had kindly offered them a trip to Montague Island for the evening penguin walk with National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers, but unfortunately inclement weather caused this to be cancelled.
Sunday morning saw the CanTeen kids out again on the inlet for more fishing on the barbeque boats supplied by Narooma Marina and Bill Dudley, and also on Terry Cassell’s wooden boat.
A good selection of fish were caught, including snapper, tailor, flathead and a flounder. Most of the fish were released, but not the prized flounder. And while junior club member Serena Hemmingsen was helping out, she managed to land a 32cm tailor.
“Many thanks to all the volunteers who served breakfast, lunches and dinner thanks to the food generously donated by Woolworths Narooma,” club spokesman Jan Hemmingsen said.
“Thanks also to ABC bakery, Narooma Meat Centre and Island View Beach Resort for their assistance. Without our volunteers giving up their time this great weekend would not be possible.”
