The Bombala High Heelers ladies tag team were up against the undefeated Merimbula/Pambula Hot Doggies in what was going to be a tough test for the women.
It was the High Heelers that put the first score on the board only to have the Hot Doggies strike back taking a 6 to 4 lead only seven minutes in.
Good play by the Bombala women saw them heading to the shed at half time with an 18 to 10 lead.
In the second half the ladies finally gained the upper hand by controlling the game through fierce defence and precision attacking skills.
Monique Perkins bagged her second try for the day and captain Patrice Clear scored just before the final hooter.
The Hot Doggies scored one more try in the second half but it wasn’t enough to win, the final score 30 – 14 in Bombala’s favour.
Players players and three points went to the ever consistent Patrice Clear who scored two tries, two points went to Amy Stone and one point went to Monique Perkins.
The first grade lads were also in for a fight with both Bombala and Pambula/Merimbula among the teams to be watching this year.
A spokesperson for the Bombala Club said the game was always going to be a good battle and given the friendly club rivalry the game didn’t disappoint fans.
Bombala took the first points with Brett Hodak muscling over the line, but it wasn’t long before the Bull Dogs equaled the score to 6 all.
From here Merimbula’s Kyle Shepherdson scored three times before the break, giving the Bulldogs a great lead 20 to 6 at half-time.
The second half saw the combination of Paul Perkins to a steaming Luke Ingram hit back on the scoreboard just two minutes in. Merimbula were quick to hit back and the score was 26 to 12.
The Heelers picked up their defensive efforts with big hit-ups and crunching tackles that proved too much for the Bulldogs to handle, leaving them off their feet.
Wame Belolevu, Adam Rodwell and Luke Ingram proved massive assets, but it was a classic try by Paul Perkins that started the Heelers comeback on the scoreboard.
It was in the 54th minute Bombala were behind by just two points at 24 to 26. Classy footwork and speed from Tyler Jones won points for the Heelers taking them to the lead 28 to 26 points with nine minutes left in the game.
It was a nerve-racking final few minutes, but the Bombala lads were able to hold off the Bulldogs to snatch victory.
Players player and three points were shared between Adam Rodwell and Luke Ingram, two points went to Wame Belolevu and one point to Tyler Jones.
Next weekend the Bombala Heelers head to Moruya for round 4.
