The work which has been carried out by Lions Club members and the Snowy Monaro Regional Council has included landscaping, road and parking area construction, fencing of a ‘leash free’ area for dogs, installation of a flying fox, and most importantly installation of new playground equipment was completed in early April in time for the NSW school holidays.
The upgrade is already immensely popular with local families as it is new, children like the equipment and the area is spacious and uncongested compared to the town centre playground.
The latest stage of Cooma Lions Club long term involvement with Lions Park began with the development of a concept plan by Cooma Lion Colleen Reeks in early 2015.
This led to coordination with the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, development of an approved Concept Plan and design by a Canberra landscape architect and joint implementation of the current work program with the council.
The purchasing and the work has been facilitated by a grant under the auspices of the NSW Government ClubGRANTS scheme.
More than 1,500 Cooma Lions person hours have gone into the project which has been managed by Lions Club Project manager Chris Reeks and Construction manager John Britton.
“Our ongoing aim is to upgrade an original Cooma Lions Project, to bring it into the 21st Century and provide an up-to-date fun and recreational facility,” Chris Reeks said
Cooma Lions have been advised that there will be an official opening of the current upgrade by a Government dignitary, tentatively set for Monday 5 June.
Work currently in hand includes further landscaping, improvement of site drainage, upgrade of the barbecue/picnic shelter, and construction of a concrete path to the original car park. Future upgrades towards realizing John Britton’s dream of developing the site into an ‘Adventure Playground’ are likely to include construction of an additional car parking area, construction of the next section of the Cooma North to Murrumbidgee walking/cycle path through the Park, and refurbishment and upgrade of the existing BMX cycle circuit. The Club is also open to Community suggestions for further upgrades.
Cooma Lions Club has had a long association with Cooma Lions Park having originally owned the land and carrying out the initial development of the site before handing it over to the Council in 1986.
