Late last week the recently formed Bombala and Delegate Region Arts and Culture Advisory Committee a sub committee under Snowy Monaro Regional Council, met and decided to start a petition to the government to save the old school.
The committee called on members of the public to contact Mr Barilaro and ask that he have the auction cancelled.
On Friday night, Penelope Judge member of the Bombala and Delegate Region Arts and Culture Advisory Committee received a message from Mr Barilaro saying that he had spoken to the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes and the auction on Saturday would be cancelled.
The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro said, the old Bombala Infants School has been unused for almost a decade.
“The historic building is owned by the NSW Government and was formally used by TAFE and during my time as the Member for Monaro, no one has ever spoken to me about re-purposing this beautiful building for other use.
“As part of TAFE's recycling of its assets and investing proceeds into new facilities, this site has been slated for sale and this has brought about some local interest.
“A number of members of the community have now contacted me, seeking my intervention in pausing the sale.
“I feel it’s worth exploring and considering more options around the purpose of this building and therefore I have been able, with the assistance of the Minister, to stop the current sale process.
“Ultimately the priority use of this building should be one that brings more jobs, tourism and opportunity to Bombala and the broader region,” Mr Barilaro said.
However committee spokesperson, Penelope Judge said the committee was not doing it for tourism they were doing it for the community.
