Toro, meaning “tuna”, quietly opened its doors over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and has already been seen to be brimming with customers through the Lawrence Hargrave shopfront.
It’s the first culinary venture for Thirroul resident and sushi chef Daniel Ahn, who wanted to open his own restaurant in his much loved home suburb.
Mr Ahn moved to Australia six years ago, a move he believes was essential for his family.
“It’s a good opportunity for living and for kids. I have two kids, one just starting school and a 20-month-old boy. I think they’ll enjoy the life here,” he said.
The businessman hoped being a local would give him an advantage by understanding the needs of customers and potential customers.
A plate of sushi with salmon, kingfish, cooked prawn, scallop, blue fin belly and eel was brought out for the Illawarra Mercury to try. An a la carte version of teriyaki salmon was also served.
Gluten free options are available, while parents can bring the little ones with several high chairs available.
