Narooma charter boat Playstation had a great day on the water on Saturday while out wide chasing tuna. Skipper Nick Cowley reported after hooking up a solid fish on the troll, they cubed up a patch of fish that they thought to be bluefin tuna but after looking closely at photos and many discussions with people turns out they found a nice patch of bigeye tuna.

“The first fish we boated was in the 60-70kg range, had the fish swimming around the boat eating cubes for about an hour only two anglers on the boat we managed to land three fish each taking around the hour mark, one around 60-70kgs another at 45 and the third around the 55kg mark, along with a bunch on albies on the jig before heading in early! Not very often we see bigeye tuna (never) was a very special day to top it off with a glass-out conditions made for an unreal day, bluefin tuna remain quiet with many boats out looking for no result hopefully thing keep improving!”
The day before on Friday after a very quiet week in terms of tuna, the Playstation with skipper Benny Bolton on board swapped over to fishing the bottom deep dropping with great results with blue eye trevella up to 20kgs and a much sought-after hapuka!
In another unusual catch, Stacey Kellett of Mystery Bay caught a nice big cuttlefish on a bit of squid while fishing for snapper in about 30 meters just south of Bermagui last week. Nice to hear she released to let him go do what he does!
Bermi Bait and Tackle reports today, Wednesday, plenty of life just over the edge south of the 12 Mile. Water temps inside 200ftm were only 17.2' with a break outside that to 17.8' with no change out to the 1000fthm line.
Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler is reporting some nice squid in Wagonga at the moment, after productive quick flick with the squid jig.
Graham at Moruya Tackle World reports whiting in both Moruya and Tuross systems last week. The four-ways in Tuross and the hole in the wall for Moruya have both produced. Grub tail plastics have worked, but the majority were caught using worms and live nippers.
Jewfish have been on the bite down the front of Tuross River on live baits such as poddy mullet and some also being caught using 100mm plastics loaded with scent. The oyster racks in both Moruya and Tuross are holding some decent bream, most of them lured in by crank lures in both shallow and deep diving.
Perch and Bass are are hanging around the highway bridges in both systems but keep in mind it is closed season and they are not allowed to be kept.
Salmon are still running off the beaches and breakwall at the moment. The majority of anglers are using pillies and gang hooks. Squid are still coming in off the rocks at South Broulee and Shellys beach in Moruya with the more natural colour jigs working best this week.
Offshore, bluefin are moving around offshore for the game fisherman, a few albacore also. Some solid snapper and mowies are coming in just off Moruya with the bait of choice being striped tuna and fresh calamari. The flathead are thick off Moruya with good numbers caught this week on pillies and squid.
The reefs are also fishing well for all the typical reef species in the local area. Thanks Graham.
In other news, the Batemans Marine Park management plan is out for comment. More on that here
