This year the Blue Heelers dedicated their heritage round a celebration of the culmination of two powerhouse clubs coming together when the Delegate Tigers joined forces with the Bombala Blue Heelers back in 1983.
The first grade lads were presented with their heritage jerseys by former Delegate/Bombala players and it was with great pride the first grade Bombala team took to the field.
Bombala started well with fullback Bailey Jones finding gaps in the opposition’s defence, scoring out wide just two minutes into the game.
Eight minutes later classy Bombala halfback Tyler Jones took an intercept to run 60 metres to put one over the line for the Heelers.
The Heelers were leading 10 to nil just 13 minutes in when Cooma halfback Zack Smith scored putting first points on the board for the Stallions.
On the back of some Bombala unforced errors, Cooma’s Blayne Thomas pushed through the defenders to score and with precision kicking the Stallions took the lead 12 to 10.
Cooma scored again just before half time and went to the sheds 18 to 10.
The away side started strongly after the break with Cooma centre Karlos Filiga scored out wide.
At 22 to 10 Bombala had some work to do and they hit back hard with Alex Rosten chasing down a fantastic Blake Robinson bomb to beat the defenders and score what look liked the try of the day only to be called back by the ref with an offside call.
It was Tyler Jones, his fancy footwork and speed taking advantage of a quick dart from dummy who strode away to score for the Heelers and the score was 14 to 22.
A combination between Joe Bobbin and Adam Rodwell saw Joe race away to score, edging the Heelers closer 18 to 22.
Bailey Jones was instrumental in the next try providing great support up the middle, striding away only to be held up inches shy of the line.
Quick play of the ball to Tyler Jones who could not be shut down by the Cooma lads allowed Jones to score a hat trick of tries.
Conversions were not in Bombala’s favour and it seemed they were going to have to beat the top of the table, undefeated Stallions the hard way.
Finally the score were locked at 22 all with 10 minutes on the clock, it was still anybody’s game.
It was Wame Belolevu who muscled his way though defenders and scored out wide.
With five minutes to go the crowd went ballistic as again the conversion was waved away and Bombala led 26 to 22.
Cooma capitalised on a floating loose pass from Bombala and pushed over for one last try and converted taking the final score to 28 to 26. Ironically Bombala scored 6 tries to Cooma’s 5.
