Students started the day learning about binary codes and learned the binary code for their names and made a coded bracelet
They learned the binary code for their names and made a ‘coded bracelet’ in order to demonstrate their understanding of binary code.
When they had completed the students then used real life algorithms to make a paper plane that they tested to see which could fly the greatest distance.
“There were many surprises from both teachers and students,” a spokesperson said.
During the second session teachers from Bombala Public School and Bombala High School led students through a series of hands on activities to code programs for Beebots, Spheros, Ollies and EV3 robots.

These exciting ‘robots’ moved through programs/codes designed by the students using starting and end points.
“When we observed the robots in action it looked easy to manoeuvre them, however the students were faced with some challenges in choosing directionality, spaces and steps,” a teacher said.
During the afternoon session St Joseph’s Primary school conducted a mini STEM inquiry where students were asked to collaboratively work in small groups to build a free standing tower structure out of spaghetti, marshmallows and masking tape.
“Many bursts of laughter were heard as students tested their towers,” the spokesperson said.
Both students and participating staff enjoyed the range of activities and the hands on tasks used to explore a range of coding activities.
Staff and students are looking forward to the next Middle School Day at Delegate later in the term where students will work collaboratively through a range of arts based activities.
Thank you to Ms Paine, Ms Clarke, Mrs Sellers, Mrs Roberts, Mrs Crawford, Mrs Tozer, Mr Bennet and Mrs Power for a great day of learning and activities.
Coding and robotics
Coding is the preliminary part of any technology process which involves telling a computer what you want it to do through step-by-step commands.
It requires technical knowledge of the programming languages of code.
If you can speak the language of code you can contribute towards creating the solutions needed for the 21st century.
Sphero inspires a love of robotics, coding, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) principles through play.
